Studio Canius Degenaar is a small architecture studio based in Amsterdam. 

We have a strong fascination for the question how it is possible that some old buildings could remain in use for centuries. To be well equipped for today’s sustainable tasks, insight into this area is necessary. It has to do with the flexibility of the plan, the properties of the materials used, the location but for sure also with beauty. It is crucial as an architect to design space that give people a rich experience that they love to store in their memory. After all, a place that is loved will have less chance of being demolished...

	Eline Degenaar (1990) currently works at Elephant in Amsterdam as well practice independently developing small-scale residential projects.  She has previously worked for H5 architects on large-scale residential projects, for Kraaijvanger Architects on the highschool campus Lelystad and a museum for the philosophy of life, at Atelier van Berlo on the transformation of a powerplant into offices, at Studio Maarten van Kesteren on a renovation of a school for crafts and at Braaksma &#38;amp; Roos she participated in the valuelab; a multidisciplinary team that conducts research into possible new interpretations for the vacant state property in the International Zone of The Hague. She studied Architecture at the Technical University of Delft and the Technical University of Berlin.
 
	Peter Canisius (1988) currently works at Studioninedots in Amsterdam as well practice independently developing small-scale residential projects. He has previously worked for EM2N in Switzerland and in the Netherlands he worked for Chris Collaris, Atelier van Berlo, OZ Architect and Paul de Ruiter. As a result, he has experience with many different projects in all scales. At OZ Architect, Peter worked on the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Amsterdam, at Atelier van Berlo on a large residential tower, at EM2N on a building for the University of Zurich and for Chris Collaris on many private homes. Peter Canisius studied at TU Delft and the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam.

Type: transformation of a farm into a dwelling

Our aim was to transform the dark cow barn into a lively bright living space, not losing its characteristics from the time it was a farm. By means of a spatial study, it was investigated where floor parts could be removed and light let into the barn, but also how characteristic elements that recalled the time when cows inhabited the space could be preserved.


This has resulted in an interesting spatial experience in which the space alternately feels intimate and safe for the user, but also specious in contact with the surrounding polder landscape. The space underneath the remaining floor keeps, with its low floor hight and small farm windows, the cosy atmosphere desirable for a seating area. A glass conservatory following the shape of the pitched roof at the back of the barn adds an extra light space from where you can watch the clouds pass by. The wooden columns have beautiful shapes due to the sanding of the cowhide. These are placed on natural stone pedestals, in which power outlets have been concealed.

Multiple space-saving solutions combined with a light and warm material palette define the spaciousness of this tiny Amsterdam loft. With the use of 1:1 mockups it was investigated how small footprint living can still feel spacious.

By keeping the floorpan as open as possible, integrate smart storage areas, and emphasize on views and daylight we succeed to create a royal spacious feeling on only 50 square meter. To create extra living space the attic has been added to&#38;nbsp;the apartment; storage space that had to be returned to the lower floor.
The lower floor consists of one continuous space that houses the living room, kitchen and study. Storey-high interior elements have been placed here at strategic locations that naturally separate the spaces from each other and serve as the missing storage space. The most eye-catching element is the central wall between the living room and kitchen, where on 2.5 m2 there is a wardrobe, stairs, storage room, kitchen cupboard and bookcase. In the wall between kitchen and bathroom, the shower and kitchen cabinets interlock to make smart use of every square meter. The color and material concept enhances the spaciousness of this apartment. Quite white and gray background colors have been chosen for the walls and floor. The interior elements here stand out in terms of color and materialization and thus define the spaces. This combination provides a fresh and spacious character to the home.

This former social housing apartment was in need of an update. By using principles we learned from our Tiny Loft project we made this apartment ready for the future. That is to make the most use of the space by making one central block which defines all the spaces. This central block hosts the kitchen, bathroom sinks, storage and all the utilities.The full interior renovation of this project is completed in 2023, an extension to the living area will be completed in spring 2025. More updates will follow after completion of the extension.

An artists couple assigned us to investagete how to create maximum spaciousness in there compact home. They wished for a place where they could relax, exhibit their valuables, get inspired and also important; offering a place &#38;nbsp;for friends to stay over.
  By keeping the floorpan as open as possible, integrate smart storage areas, and emphasize on views and daylight we designed a royal spacious feeling on only 47 square meter. The ‘day’ area consists of one continuous space that houses the dining room, kitchen, &#38;nbsp;living room and an inspiration-space fully clad in wood. From the daybed you have a beautiful view of the large platan tree in front of the window. A wall covering bookcase offers sufficient inspiration for developing new work. The wooden space can be closed with a sliding door offerting guests privacy. 

Storey-high interior elements have been placed here at strategic locations that naturally separate the spaces from each other and serve as the storage space. The color and material concept enhances the spaciousness of this apartment. Quite white and gray background colors have been chosen for the walls and floor. The interior elements here stand out in terms of color and materialization and thus define the spaces. This combination provides a fresh and spacious character to the home.

Currently we are working on the interior transformation of this beautiful 47 m2 cabin.Together with our clients we investigate the perfect balance of living- and storage space. With our design we hope to contribute to unforgettable summers at Lake Michigan for this young New York based family.
 The central element works as a space organizer. It creates a place to take off your shoes upon enterin, an extra sleeping area at the rear of the cabin and a living/dining area with spectacular views over the lake.
